Once upon a time, all the city of Venice was a wide port installation; the wheat was stored on the berths just in front of St. Mark square and the full town was living and really taking its prosperity from activities deriving from the sea; those who happened to visit our city, would have noted that even the architecture of the buildings, with the ground floor communicating directly with the sea door, was a structure complying with the maritime trading of the families. | ||
| The strong industrialization occurred during the last century and the developement of sea traffic caused slowly the enlargement of the port in the hinterland areas where wide surfaces in front of the lagoon were available, with the results that nowadays the old-port structures in the historical center of Venice are fully dedicated to the berthing of the sole cruise and passenger ships, while almost the totality of marine cargoes is now handled at Porto Marghera only. |
